History (1 of

The Algarve has a long and colourful history
and has been occupied by the Phoenicians, Romans and Christians
at one time or another.
However it is the Moors who have left the biggest impression
on the region's architecture, place names, style of farming, and
culture.
Most towns and villages still bear the legacy of five centuries
of
Arab rule, visible in their narrow streets and the style
of houses,
eg lattice chimneys and tiles, and in the many place names
beginning with 'Al'.
